I'm Shawn Carlson. I built my first atom smasher at 14. I went on to earn a Ph.D. in nuclear physics, to win a MacArthur Fellowship, and to write "The Amateur Scientist" column for Scientific American magazine. I've founded a number of science education programs and I've taught the art of doing science for over 30 years.

The Fellowship for Mad Scientists is my legacy project. I want this community to become the greatest resource for science doers ever. I want this to become the place where today's generation and future generations of serious science doers come to participate in the great adventure that is scientific discovery.
