I'm Shawn Carlson. I built my first atom smasher at 14. I went on to earn a Ph.D. in nuclear physics, to win a MacArthur Fellowship, and to write The Amateur Scientist column for Scientific American magazine . I ran the SciTech Hands-On Science Museum, founded both the Society for Amateur Scientists and the LabRats Science Education Program, and I've taught the art of doing science for over 30 years.

This is my legacy project. I want this community to become the greatest resource for science doers ever. I want this to become the place where today's generation and future generations of serious science doers come to participate in the great adventure that is scientific discovery.
